What Is the Difference Between a Router and a Modem?

The Modem's Role

Think of the modem as the bridge between your home and the internet service provider (ISP). It pulls the signal from the cable or fiber line entering your house and translates that raw data into a digital format your computers can interpret. Without a modem, you cannot have a live internet connection.

The Router's Purpose

Once the modem establishes the connection, the router acts as the traffic cop. It takes that single internet signal and distributes it to your various devices via WiFi or Ethernet cables. It also manages your private local network, assigning unique internal IP addresses so your devices don't conflict with one another.
