A dual-band router broadcasts two separate wireless signals simultaneously: a 2.4GHz band and a 5GHz band. The 2.4GHz band is excellent at traveling through walls and covering larger distances but is often crowded by older devices and neighboring networks. The 5GHz band provides much faster speeds and higher performance, but it has a shorter range and struggles to penetrate solid objects like walls or floors.

Modern dual-band routers often use a feature called band steering, which automatically moves your devices to the best frequency available. This is crucial for maintaining performance. For example, your smart home lightbulbs can stay on the 2.4GHz band since they require very little data, while your work laptop and streaming devices can utilize the high-speed 5GHz band to ensure lag-free video conferencing and entertainment.
