How to Set Up a Surround Sound System
A good surround system turns movie night into an event. Here's how to place speakers, run wires, and tune the whole thing.

Start With the Channels
Surround sound is described by a number: 5.1 means five speakers plus one subwoofer — the sweet spot for most rooms. A 5.1 setup has:
- A center speaker (dialogue) above or below the TV
- Front left and right speakers flanking the TV
- Two surround speakers to your sides or just behind you
- A subwoofer for deep bass (the .1)
7.1 adds two more surrounds behind you. Atmos adds ceiling or up-firing speakers for height. Start with 5.1 and expand if you fall in love with it.
Where to Put Each Speaker
- Center: ear height when seated, aimed straight at the main seat. This is the most important speaker — 70% of a movie's sound is dialogue.
- Front L/R: at ear height, about 30 degrees to either side of the screen, angled slightly toward the listening spot.
- Surrounds: slightly behind the main seat, 90-110 degrees to the sides, a couple feet above ear level.
- Subwoofer: placement is flexible because bass is hard to localize. Try it up front first, then experiment.
Wiring
Use speaker wire (16-gauge for runs under 50 feet, 14-gauge longer) for passive speakers, or run HDMI ARC/eARC from your TV to your receiver. Label both ends before you fish wire inside walls — it saves hours later.
If you don't want to cut drywall, a wireless surround kit or on-wall cable raceway keeps things tidy.
Tuning It
Most modern receivers have an auto-calibration mic. Place it at the main seat and run it. It sets speaker levels, distances, and equalization automatically. Trust it — your ears adjust to a bad setup just as easily as a good one.
Then set your TV's audio output to bitstream and enable passthrough so the receiver gets the full Dolby Digital or Atmos signal.
The Quick Win
If all that sounds like a lot, a soundbar with a wireless sub and surrounds delivers 80% of the experience for a fraction of the effort. You'll get better dialogue clarity than TV speakers the moment you plug it in.
