What Is a Full-Motion TV Mount?

A full-motion mount — also called an articulating mount — uses a folding arm that lets you pull your television away from the wall and tilt or swivel it left, right, up, or down. Fixed mounts hold the screen flat; tilt mounts let you angle it down. Only a full-motion mount gives you the freedom to adjust the viewing angle after the TV is up.

This flexibility matters most in open floor plans, bedrooms, and patios where you watch from several different spots in the same room.

What to Look For

• Weight capacity: Every mount lists a maximum load. Pick one rated for at least 50% more than your TV weighs.
• VESA compatibility: VESA is the standard hole pattern on the back of a TV (for example 400x400). Check your TV's spec sheet and match it to the mount.
• Arm extension: Cheaper arms extend 15-18 inches; better ones reach 20-28 inches. Longer arms give a wider swivel range.
• Cable management: Look for channels inside the arm to hide HDMI and power runs.
• Wall type: Full-motion mounts must anchor into wood studs or masonry. Drywall alone will not hold a big TV.

One Caution Before You Drill

A fully extended 65-inch TV acts like a lever. The farther you pull it out, the more torque it puts on the wall anchors and the more the screen wants to sag. If your wall has metal studs or you're mounting above a fireplace, the job gets more involved — call a pro rather than risk a shattered screen.
