The Importance of the Listening Triangle

For a standard stereo or front-left-and-right setup, your speakers should form an equilateral triangle with your primary seating position. If you sit 8 feet away from the TV, your left and right speakers should also be 8 feet apart from each other. Point the speakers slightly inward—a process called 'toeing in'—toward your ears. This ensures that the high-frequency sound waves reach you directly rather than bouncing off side walls, which creates a muddy sound profile.

Managing Reflections and Bass

Where you place your speakers matters as much as the speakers themselves. Avoid placing speakers directly in the corners of the room, as this can lead to 'boomy' or distorted bass. If you have a subwoofer, place it along the wall near the TV rather than behind your sofa to ensure the bass integrates smoothly with the front speakers. Finally, use rugs or upholstered furniture in your room to dampen sound reflections; hard, bare walls are the enemy of clear, accurate home theater sound.
